RGU Celebrates Srimanta Sankardev Janmotsav with Sattriya, Mati Akhora and Bhaona
GUWAHATI, September 21, 2026: The Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems of The
Assam Royal Global University (RGU), organised a vibrant cultural programme to mark the Janmotsav of
Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, celebrating Assam’s rich and enduring traditions of Sattriya, Mati Akhora and
Bhaona.
The programme commenced with a special lecture-demonstration titled “Sattriya: A Path Pristine” by Sangeet
Natak Akademi Awardee Sarodi Saikia. Through an insightful presentation and live demonstration, she
introduced the audience to the aesthetic, spiritual and cultural dimensions of Sattriya, highlighting its
deep-rooted connection with Assam’s Neo-Vaishnavite tradition.
The highlight of the programme was the presentation of “A Glimpse from the Kamsa’s Court Episode of Shri
Krishna Rās Līlā” in the traditional form of Bhaona. The presentation brought together theatre, music,
dance, dialogue, costume and devotional expression, offering students and the audience an opportunity to
experience Assam’s living cultural heritage in an engaging and immersive manner.
The programme was also graced by Sri Lakhikanta Atoi, Sattradhikar of Jorabari Sattra. Artists from Jorabari
Sattra, Sivasagar, and Betkuchi, Guwahati, presented a traditional Bhaona, bringing alive the distinctive
theatrical tradition associated with Srimanta Sankardev and Assam’s Neo-Vaishnavite cultural heritage.
A demonstration of Mati Akhora, the traditional physical discipline associated with Sattriya practice was
presented. The demonstration highlighted the significance of balance, flexibility, coordination, strength
and bodily control, reflecting the embodied nature of traditional knowledge and its integration of physical
discipline with artistic practice.
The programme provided students with an experiential understanding of Assam’s performing arts as living
knowledge traditions. It also complemented their academic engagement with Indian Knowledge Systems by
demonstrating how traditional knowledge is preserved, practised and transmitted through artistic and
cultural expressions.
