1. BIOQUEST 1.0
BIOQUEST 1.0 – Hands-on Training Workshop on Tools in Phytochemical Research was organized by the Department of Botany, Royal School of Life Sciences, The Assam Royal Global University (RGU), in collaboration with the IQAC and Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), RGU, from 10–14 August 2026.
The five-day hands-on training programme provided practical exposure to phytochemical research, plant extraction, phytochemical screening, bioactivity assessment, and data interpretation. A total of 28 B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. participants from Botany, Zoology, and Pharmacy disciplines, representing Don Bosco University, University of Science and Technology Meghalaya, Gargaon College, Simaluguri, Sivasagar, and The Assam Royal Global University, participated in the workshop.
The programme commenced with an inaugural session on 10 August 2026, followed by a series of expert talks, laboratory demonstrations, and hands-on training sessions. The expert sessions featured resource persons from both The Assam Royal Global University and external institutions, including Dr. Pranjan Barman and Dr. Rubul Buragohain from Gauhati University. Dr. Barman spoke on recent trends in molecular identification and characterization of phytochemicals for therapeutic applications, while Dr. Buragohain addressed plant identification and challenges in plant taxonomy. Participants also received practical training in plant extraction, Soxhlet extraction, phytochemical screening, standard phytochemical tests, bioactivity assessment, and data interpretation, including assessment of antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activities. The programme further covered intellectual property rights, computer-aided drug discovery, pharmaceutical product development, prototype showcasing, and research translation from laboratory to startup, providing participants with a comprehensive research-oriented learning experience.
2. Students Explore Salamander Habitats through IndiaBioscience-Supported Outreach Activity
As part of an outreach initiative supported by the IndiaBioscience Outreach Grant, Dr. Upashna Chettri, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, Royal School of Life Sciences, The Assam Royal Global University, organized an educational field visit to salamander habitats at Sukhia Pokhari, Darjeeling on 01.07.2026. The program engaged 25 students from the Green Scouts of St. Robert’s School, Darjeeling, providing them with a unique opportunity to explore the natural habitats of the Himalayan salamander. During the field visit, students observed salamanders in their natural environment and were able to identify different developmental stages of the species. Through direct interaction with the habitat, students gained insights into the ecological importance of salamanders, the role of their habitats in maintaining biodiversity, and the threats posed by habitat degradation and environmental change. The outreach program aimed to encourage young learners to appreciate the importance of conserving vulnerable species and their ecosystems. The activity offered valuable experiential learning by connecting classroom concepts with real-world conservation challenges.
