Programme Overview:

The Diploma in Interior Design is designed for students seeking a career in interior design field. The Diploma focuses on commercial design including hospitality, offices and retail environments. Students will study advanced design theory, commercial space planning, sustainability practices, codes and barrier-free compliance, lighting, design history, visual communication, critical reading and writing, construction drawings, millwork and furniture design. Students will gain hands-on experience in the Joinery shop to expand their understanding of millwork details and assembly. Students will achieve both a strong academic and technical foundation on completion of this program. Students learn from industry-based faculty and develop extensive practical skills for rewarding careers.


This subject exposes the students to the basics of interior design and the fundamentals of design theory. Students will learn to understand and appreciate design by exploring and applying the various elements and principles of interior design including color and color theory. The study of human factors like ergonomics and anthropometry will be an integral part of the course so that students will be able to understand the relation between the natural and the built environment.  The interdisciplinary module focuses on methodological and technical approach. It equips; the learner with an understanding of various interior styles. The teaching methodology helps the student to understand furnishings and materials and also helps them to get acquainted with the art and science of creating harmony with colours, textures and patterns. The course has designed to help learners to understand the constantly evolving landscape of interior design by keeping in mind the varying tastes and preferences of different demographics and cultures. The program provides students with a platform to fully develop their latent creative skills and express their views. The programs encourage students to develop creative, artistic, individual and imaginative approach towards interior design. Regular industry interaction with experts, exhibitions and workshops helps in acquiring in-depth knowledge of the field.

Learning Facilities:

Royal Global University provides its students with dedicated Interior Design classroom with digital equipment’s, air-conditioned Studios with drawing boards and work tables, carpentry & welding workshop with industry-standard machineries, well equipped high end computers with applicable design software (i.e. AutoCAD, 3D Max, Photoshop, Google sketch up etc.to enable students to convert their imagination into a virtual reality. The department has material lab well equipped with the latest building materials in the market to keep the students updated. Model making workshop for miniature modeling, access to Art studio and an in-house library apart from the Central Library which is equipped with a collection of books, journals and e-journals from the field of Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape, Design etc. Students are encouraged to excel by taking part in industry visits, interaction with experts, exhibitions, seminars and workshop, etc.

Career Opportunities:

Diverse job opportunities exist in front of interior design professionals. They may either choose to work under supervised setup (Design studios and Interior design firms) or work independently. When it comes to Government sector jobs, PWDs, Municipal Corporations and Town Planning Departments are known to hire interior design professionals. They may also become part of Government schemes related to housing and relocation of people. Some of the well-known recruiters include:

    Entrepreneurship, If one has entrepreneurship skills and access to decent financial resources, one may start own interior design firm or consultancy service. Creative & talented individuals can venture into design & sale of various interior decoration & utility products too.

Programme Outcome:

On successful completion of Diploma in Interior Design, students will have the ability to: conceptualize and design interiors for home, retails, hotels, hospitals, offices, museums, and public spaces, including entertainment spaces. They will be able to develop and integrate trends in interior design They develop the ability to understand the design, technology and techniques to design spaces effectively and understand building and safety codes, principles and practices for environmental and sustainable interior design. Students will be able to produce working drawings, specifications, layouts and suggest materials and finishes for a specific project. With the wide variety of live design projects, presentations, lab works, research papers and critique students shall be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the various components of interior designing. Student develops designs, suggest materials and suggest systems for various spaces for aesthetic and effective functioning. Students develop the ability of visual sensitivity and good communication skills. They will be able to work in a given budget and time frame and develop the capacity of working in a team.
